A 100% online Postnatal / Mum and Baby Yoga Teacher Training course. The course is for yoga teachers, midwives, fitness professionals, NCT teachers, childbirth educators, physiotherapists, chiropractors and health care professionals wanting to become a Mum and Baby Yoga Instructor.
The course is ideal for anyone who feels a calling to support new mums with yoga and desires the flexibility of study at their own time and pace.

The course is a 75 hour course and has a 6 month time limit (although with dedication many complete more quickly) and during this time you will have continual access to and support from your experienced and deeply kind personal tutor. We also offer ongoing aftercare to all our students, and a buzzing private Facebook support group for you to be a part of should you wish to.

New mums are a delicate group who greatly benefit from the nurture found in postnatal yoga classes. As mums ourselves we have been there. We know it’s a challenging time for many. But we also know quite how much help yoga can give a new mum who may be feeling especially vulnerable during this time. For this reason, this course is very dear to us.

You will complete the training with a thorough understanding of the physical and emotional experience of new mums and how to best support them with yoga, as well as advertising materials, personal class plans and teaching experience (all with the mentorship of your tutor).

*Please note that this training course does not qualify you to teach Baby Yoga*

You should study not only that you become a mother when your child is born but also that you become a child

– Dogen

This training course provides comprehensive and vigorous training, so that we can ensure that your investment will enable you to teach safely and knowledgeably.
You will complete the course with a thorough understanding of pregnancy yoga, as well as advertising materials, personal class plans and teaching experience.
We’ve seen some other training courses where you get to view their ‘face to face’ training for a price. Ours is different to that. It was designed for self study, and with our home study pupils in mind. The assignments are practical in nature and geared towards supporting you as a new teacher.

About the Course Content

This online course consists of 3 fully illustrated modules, each with a 4 question assignment, bonus videos and a Pregnancy Yoga and Postnatal Recovery DVD. Coming to postnatal classes gives mums time and space to acknowledge and deal with any anxieties about how the birth went, how they feel now, and to be part of a supportive group of women who are all in the same boat. Discussing the highs and lows of being a new parent can put things in perspective, and reduce feelings of isolation and doubts about not being a good enough mum.

Postnatal Yoga focuses on postures specifically designed to help regain strength and tone in a safe, effective way. The emphasis is on strengthening the pelvic floor, the abdomen, legs and back, and opening and relaxing tensions in the shoulders, neck and arms. Restorative poses are also strongly recommended, particularly in the 3 – 4 months following the birth.

Mum and Baby Yoga is gentle, to allow time to integrate the experiences of the body after birth, and to regain core strength and energy. Mums and babies often need to stay closely connected in the early phase of parenting, so it is wonderful to provide a class where baby is welcome and mum is nurtured.

Module 1

Coming home, self-nurture, natural remedies for postnatal discomforts, breast-feeding, postnatal depression, and postnatal recovery in the first 6 weeks.

Module 2

Postnatal class options (mums only, mum and baby, pre and postnatal combined, postnatal students in a general class); appropriate asana, class management, logistics, benefits, promotion, post C-section and diastasis recti awareness, dad and baby yoga.

Module 3

Postnatal class aims, postnatal/mum and baby class content, correct lifting and carrying, partner yoga.

Making the decision to have a child is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body

– Elizabeth Stone

Course Aims

Teaching postnatal yoga is a real honour. You get to the chance to support new Mums who you may have nurtured through pregnancy and watch them change and come to terms with their new role in life.

The postnatal period is one in which women are establishing their new role as a mother but also seeking to strengthen and reinvigorate their bodies. It’s a time of uncertainty and rapid change; one in which yoga can play an important role.

Here are some excellent benefits postnatal classes can offer. Our aim is to spread these benefits as far as we can!

  • classes give them time to release stress and strain from the demands of their baby therefore creating a calmer approach to motherhood
  • classes also provide some welcome time with or without baby, where they can just be themselves in a non judgemental environment and they can find time to nurture themselves in their own right.

  • being a Mum for the first time can be lonely and a local postnatal yoga class provides a local social network and kinship which in itself can work as a great buffer against stress and depression.

  • Classes help ladies connect with their body and baby after birth. Postnatal classes will also help restore core strength in the body, and to build energy and stamina.

Course Tutor - Lara Heppell

Lara has been practising yoga for over 20 years, teaching for 15 and is a Senior Yoga Teacher, Women’s Wellness Mentor, Teacher Trainer, Mizan abdominal massage therapist, Doula and Women’s circle facilitator.

Initially trained in Dynamic yoga with Godfrey Devereux she then went on to study at the renowned KYM in India. After a period of illness with suspected womb health issues and finding conceiving her son not quite as straightforward as she expected, Lara started to explore a gentler approach to yoga and began to study with Liz Koch and Uma Dinsmore Tuli.

Lara became fascinated by Womb Yoga and the effect of Yoga upon fertility, the menstrual cycle and conception, and she undertook extensive training in Pregnancy Yoga, Mum and Baby Yoga, Womb Yoga, Well Woman Yoga Therapy, Menstrual Health, Menopause and Fertility. She has also studied with Alexandra Pope and runs introductory courses for teachers on how to safely integrate pre and postnatal students into Yoga classes.

An experienced Restorative Yoga teacher Lara trained with the world-renowned teacher Judith Hanson Lasater, and the teachings of Fabiano Cularo in Somatic movement and the Yoga goddess Angela Farmer completely altered her way of thinking.

She regularly teaches a variety of classes, workshop and retreats at Yoga Kula studio in Leeds as well as on the Yoga Kula Teacher training programme. Lara offers mentoring and supervision support to newer teachers too.

Lara is passionate about nurturing and supporting women’s wellbeing at every stage of life through Yoga, movement, meditation, bodywork and seasonal and cycle awareness. She has appeared in Woman and Home magazine, The Sunday Telegraph and ITV Tonight’s The Truth about Menopause documentary.

“For me Yoga is self-love in action and helps me find balance in a busy world, and as mum to a very active son. I’m obsessed with my cycle, the seasons and the ways in which we can work more closely with ourselves and nature to bring more awareness, compassion and balance into our lives. I thrive on listening to music, being out in nature, or being by the sea – it soothes and calms my wild side!”

“My aim in the yoga that I teach is to support women to find more balance and harmony in their lives by deepening their inner connection to their own bodies’ needs.”

I’ve so enjoyed studying again and especially something that I love, believe in and want to share. It’s been so lovely to work with you and you’ve been so helpful. Thank you for the ongoing support offered too. I shall let you know when I start a class- I’m hoping to offer a free course in the children’s centre to start with, to build my confidence. I’ll hopefully keep in touch in a positive way, but it’s reassuring to know you’ll be available if I get into difficulties. – Caroline Petty, UK

Course author - JANE MACKARNESS

Jane has been studying and practicing yoga for 41 years, teaching since 1979, and training teachers for 21 years. Based in Devon, she offers classes and teacher training workshops and courses in the UK and abroad, and is the author of the perinatal and fertility yoga teacher training courses offered here by Lara Heppell.

Jane was introduced to yoga at the age of 13, when her mother Ruth attended classes with the late B K S Iyengar in London in 1966. Ruth loved his classes and Iyengar gave her his book, the classic Light on Yoga, dedicated to her and containing notes for her personal practice after a mastectomy. When Ruth died in 1967, Jane inherited this treasure and comforted herself by practicing yoga.

After studying integral yoga for four years with the late Kevin Kingsland, Jane studied for the BWY Dip with Jenni Adams, and started teaching in 1979. She continuously studies and refers to texts from the great teachers Iyengar, Swami Jnaneshvara Bharati, T K V Desikachar, Donna Farhi and Mooji, and attends workshops when time allows.

Jane is an E-RYT with the US Yoga Alliance, qualified to conduct teacher training and offer yoga CPD workshops and courses. She has thousands of hours teaching and training experience, is a Yoga Elder (Independent Yoga Network) and a Professional Member of the IAYT (International Association of Yoga Therapists). She qualified as a Classical Homeopath with Misha Norland in 1987 and practiced for several years, she is also a Reiki Master.

Jane’s current focus is on Yoga Nidra and Trauma Sensitive Yoga teacher training. Since her beloved son Guy died in 2013, yoga and yoga nidra practice have been a lifeline, more than ever before.

Yoga is 100% reliable; practiced with attention to the breath, spine, alignment, and deep relaxation; it always moves us into a better space. Stillness and silence are powerful teachers.
